What Grade Do I Need on My Final?
Use your current grade, target grade, and final exam weight to calculate the score you need on the final. The goal of this page is to give you the answer immediately, then explain the conversion or calculation in plain language so you can use it with confidence.
How to Calculate It
Use this formula: needed final score = (target grade - current grade x (1 - final weight)) / final weight. The formula is included so you can check the result yourself or adjust the numbers when the situation is slightly different.
Final Grade Example
Suppose your current grade is 84%, your target grade is 90%, and the final is worth 30% of the class. The calculator uses your current grade for the completed work and solves for the final exam score needed to reach the target.
What Final Weight Means
Final weight is the percentage of the overall course grade controlled by the final exam. A final worth 10% changes your grade less than a final worth 40%, so the same target grade can require a very different exam score.
How to Read the Result
If the needed score is under 100%, the target is mathematically possible. If it is over 100%, the target may not be reachable unless your teacher offers extra credit, drops low scores, or uses a different grading policy.
