Convert Military Time to Standard Time
Military time is usually written as four digits without a colon. The first two digits are the hour and the last two digits are the minutes. For example, 0000 means 12:00 AM, 1200 means 12:00 PM, and 1430 means 2:30 PM.
How Military Time Works
Times from 0000 to 1159 are AM. 1200 is noon. For 1300 through 2359, subtract 12 from the hour and use PM. Some charts also show 2400 as midnight at the end of the day, while 0000 means midnight at the start of the day.
Military Time Conversion Examples
Military time is easiest to read when you split it into hours and minutes. 0730 is 7:30 am, 0900 is 9:00 am, 1215 is 12:15 pm, 1600 is 4:00 pm, 1845 is 6:45 pm, and 2330 is 11:30 pm. If the number is less than 1200, it is usually morning. If the number is greater than 1200, subtract 1200 from the hour portion and use pm.
Military Time Chart and 24 Hour Format
The military time chart above shows the most common hour and half-hour conversions. It is useful when you want to scan a schedule quickly instead of entering each time by hand. Military time and 24-hour time are closely related, but military time is often written without the colon, so 14:30 becomes 1430 and 08:00 becomes 0800.
Common Mistakes
The most common mistake is treating 1200 as midnight. In military time, 1200 is noon. Midnight is usually written as 0000 at the start of a day, while 2400 may appear on some charts to mean midnight at the end of a day. Another common mistake is dropping the leading zero from morning times: 0730 should be written as 0730, not 730, when a strict four-digit format is needed.
When This Converter Helps
Use it for work shifts, travel itineraries, flight times, hospital schedules, school timetables, event plans, support hours, and any schedule written in a 24-hour format.
Why Military Time Is Used
Military time reduces confusion because every time of day has one clear number. There is no need to guess whether 7:00 means morning or evening. That makes it practical for hospitals, emergency services, aviation, transportation, warehouses, security teams, international businesses, and any situation where a missed AM or PM can create a real scheduling problem.
